Ledger Wallet / Ledger Live on desktop

How to use the official Ledger Wallet application on Windows, macOS or Linux and connect a compatible Ledger hardware device to your computer.

Before you begin

Download Ledger Wallet only from the official Ledger website. This independent website does not distribute the application.

Connect a Ledger hardware wallet to a computer

Install or update Ledger Wallet

Use Ledger’s official download page and choose the version for your operating system. Open the installed desktop application.

Connect the hardware device

Use a suitable data-capable USB cable. Connect the Ledger device directly to the computer when possible rather than through an unpowered hub.

Unlock the device

Enter the PIN on the physical Ledger device. Do not type the PIN into a website or third-party form.

Follow the app prompt

Ledger Wallet may ask to verify the device or permit access to My Ledger. Read the prompt on the hardware screen before approving.

Add accounts or manage device apps

Use the application interface to add supported accounts. For blockchain apps installed on the hardware device, open My Ledger.

Windows, macOS and Linux

The general connection flow is similar across desktop platforms, but USB permissions, drivers and security prompts can differ. If the app cannot see your device, use the troubleshooting guide before repeatedly reconnecting it.

Windows

Check the cable, USB port and current USB drivers. Close other wallet applications that may already be using the Ledger connection.

macOS

Keep Ledger Wallet current and approve legitimate operating-system prompts when required. Try a direct USB connection if a hub is unreliable.

Linux

Linux may require device access rules or permissions. Use Ledger’s current official Linux instructions for your distribution.

Ledger Wallet desktop and your hardware device

Ledger Wallet is the software interface; the Ledger hardware device is where sensitive signing actions are confirmed. Connecting the device to desktop software should not require entering recovery words into the computer.
