Using a Ledger hardware wallet with browser wallets and Web3 apps

Ledger hardware devices can work with compatible browser wallets and Web3 applications. The browser interface and the hardware signer have different roles.

Important distinction

This page does not describe an “official Ledger browser wallet.” It explains how a Ledger hardware device can be connected to compatible third-party browser wallets or web applications.

Typical connection flow

Use the official website of the wallet or Web3 app

Check the domain carefully before connecting. Avoid links from unsolicited messages or look-alike domains.

Install the required blockchain app on the Ledger device

For example, an EVM-based browser wallet may require the Ethereum app on the hardware device. Install device apps through My Ledger in the official Ledger Wallet application.

Close software that may hold the device connection

Two wallet applications can sometimes compete for access to the same hardware device. If a browser wallet cannot connect, close Ledger Wallet and retry if the third-party wallet’s official instructions recommend it.

Select the hardware-wallet connection option

Choose Ledger or the relevant hardware-wallet option in the third-party wallet. Connection technology may use USB, WebHID, WebUSB, Bluetooth or another supported bridge depending on the platform.

Verify every approval on the Ledger screen

Addresses and signing prompts should be checked on the physical device before confirmation.

External wallets

Third-party wallets can provide an interface to accounts controlled by a Ledger hardware signer. Connecting a Ledger device to a compatible external wallet should not require importing the Ledger Secret Recovery Phrase into that wallet.

Browser connection troubleshooting

  • Confirm that the third-party wallet officially supports your Ledger model and browser.
  • Try a supported Chromium-based browser when the wallet documentation requires it.
  • Close other wallet applications that may be using the device.
  • Make sure the correct blockchain app is open on the Ledger hardware device.
  • Check cable and USB permissions for desktop connections.
